Transfer Rumor: Romelu Lukaku absent from Napoli preseason amid Atlanta United interest
Another gladiator has entered the arena.
Atlanta United’s search for a big-named striker has supposedly taken them to Italy. According to reports out of Europe, the Five Stripes have added Belgium’s all-time leading scorer Romelu Lukaku to their list of possible signings this summer.
Fabrizio Romano is the latest to report that Lukaku, in his continued spat with the Naples club, did not show up to their preseason training camp and is expected to leave before the transfer window closes and that Atlanta is pushing to sign him.
Supposedly no official bid has been made by Atlanta, but the interest seems to be real.
The former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Inter forward is the latest high-profile No. 9 linked to the club after Darwin Nunez and Breel Embolo’s names emerged earlier this summer.
Lukaku turned 33 in May and is coming off an injury-plagued season in Serie A. However, you cannot question his résumé as he’s scored goals for some of the biggest clubs in the world.
The big question is: Is Atlanta set up to put him in the best position to produce goals like he has at every destination of his career?
There are also longevity concerns. Does he fit whatever the club is trying to do with its long-term vision for a roster rebuild?
For now, this is just an interesting rumor that will certainly draw opinion from across the globe. Let’s see how it plays out with a month left in the window.

we’re in last place. let the youth play and do better scouting for the next window so that we don’t look so desperate. i don’t want these old dudes.
As much as I respect Lukaku, our season is lost and the roster needs a complete makeover. Bringing in Lukaku benefits no one. We would god from Wooden Spoon locks to just a really bad team with a super high payroll (and still in the hunt for the Spoon).
