Report: Atlanta United to sign center back Paulo Diaz on a free transfer
MORE CENTER BACKS.
On the heels of the news that Paraguay’s Junior Alonso is one step away from joining Atlanta United, we’ve got another strong report linking the club to another center back.
According to Germán García Grova, the Five Stripes are set to sign 31-year-old Peruvian defender Paulo Diaz on a free transfer.
The respected journalist claims that the player has already undergone a medical exam with Atlanta United on Monday and is set to sign with the club after having his contract terminated by River Plate.
Diaz joined River Plate in 2019 and appeared 148 times for the club. He’s also earned 58 caps for the Peru national team.
If this report is accurate and the Alonso move materializes, that would give the squad two center back reinforcements heading into the second half of the season. This would help fill the gap on the roster left by Juan Berrocal returning to Getafe after seeing his loan expire.
While, it’s clear this team needs help defensively, they also need some fresh ideas in the final third as they can’t seem to score goals to save their lives. Here’s to hoping there are more rumors and moves coming to shore up the squad further up the field.
