Transfer Rumor: Ipswich Town could hijack Atlanta United’s Breel Embolo transfer
SILLY SEASON: FULLY ENGAGED
Now that the MLS summer transfer window is directly aligned with Europe’s we’re seeing more competition for players than ever. Atlanta United may be about to fall victim of the soccer food chain and lose out on their rumored DP striker signing.
According to L’Equipe, one of the most reliable outlets in the world, Breel Embolo has spurned Atlanta United’s contract offer at the last minute and could be close to signing with newly-promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town.
This comes just a few days after Mauricio Culebro confirmed Tom Bogert’s report that the club were in final negotiations to sign Embolo as their third Designated Player.
If you haven’t followed soccer transfers vigorously your whole life, this type of stuff happens every window and it’s why we always add a caveat to every rumor we relay that nothing is done until the club announces the deal and the player is holding up the jersey.
For now, it seems the deal is in flux, but there’s always a chance this is a ploy to get a better offer from Atlanta or an agent playing some sort of tactic. This is exactly why they call this the silly season.
Stay tuned to see if Atlanta get their man or end up empty handed with egg on their faces.
MLS wanted to put themselves in competition with Europe for transfers, this is the result. As Maurice Levy says to Orlando in The Wire after getting arrested: “You wanted to be in the game, right? Well, now you’re in the game.”
