St. Louis City vs. Atlanta United: Player Ratings
Rating the performances of the Five Stripes.
Atlanta United finished off a two-match road trip with a gritty 1-1 draw at St. Louis City on Saturday night. It was another away performance that won’t win any beauty contests but ultimately accomplished the goal of getting a result.
If you had offered anyone four points for this stretch of matches with how depleted the roster is, they would be insane not to take them.
Here is my take on how the players did individually.
Player Ratings
Starters
GK: Brad Guzan, 6: Little to do all night other than clean up duty. It’s harsh to fault him for the goal, but it was to his near post.
LWB: Caleb Wiley, 6.5: Decent defensive effort, but not as influential in the attacking end as he has been at wingback.
CB: Efrain Morales, 5: Only two defensive actions in 45 minutes. Just a quiet night for the youngster playing in back to back matches.
CB: Derrick Williams, 7: Another stellar showing from the rock of the back line. The defense is just a completely different animal when he’s in it.
CB: Noah Cobb, 6.5: Impressive work rate and consistency considering the amount of minutes he’s being asked to play in such a short amount of time.
RWB: Brooks Lennon, 6: Credited with three key passes, so his involvement in the attack is increasing again. That’s certainly a good sign going forward.
MF: Jay Fortune, 8: A really impressive performance as he did a little bit of everything in the midfield and almost scored a wondergoal. His pressing also caused major problems for St. Louis at times.
MF: Tristan Muyumba, 6: Another performance where he’s doing a lot of running and getting a lot of touches, but not really accomplishing much. His spot in the lineup might not be solid when the team reaches full strength.
MF: Xande Silva, 6.5: I have a feeling this one will split opinion, but I was very intrigued by this more central role he played. I’d like to see more of it with some more dynamic attackers in front of him. Should have had an assist.
FW: Jamal Thiare, 5: It’s clear he’s a hard worker, but his lack of quality is becoming apparent.
FW: Daniel Rios, 5.5: Usually I give an extra point to someone who scores a goal. This is his rating with that added in. You can’t keep missing big chances and expect to play.
Substitutes
SUB: Stian Gregersen, 6: Some good, some shaky moments. The team just desperately needs to get him back on the field consistently.
SUB: Dax McCarty, 5.5: Didn’t really add much to the dynamic of the team off the bench. Got skated around pretty easily on some transition moments.
SUB: Luke Brennan, NR: A couple of chances to run at defenders that amounted to little.
SUB: Nick Firmino, NR: Just an emergency sub late on.
Morales showed his age tonight. Amazing game against DC where I was saying he should start over Cobb. Tonight? Not so much. I know he’s young. I’ll give him some grace.
Tristan and Silva were horrible on their dribbles tonight. Horrible.
Derrick Williams deserves an 8+ for sure! That dude is everywhere!!!
Rios and Jamal do lack the quality we need. I had very little hope in either of them scoring.
All in all, I’m satisfied with the tie even though we needed the win.
Morales was poor, Cobb was v good most of the match but got exploited again in the air on the goal. Did Luke draw a foul in the box there near the end?
