OPINION: Atlanta United have a small window to be aggressive. They need to use it.
Get busy living or get busy dying
The transfer window closes on April 23. It is April 14. And somehow, we’ve reached a point where it already feels necessary for Atlanta to explore every possibility over those nine days. Eight games into the 2025 season, it’s clear that Atlanta is still missing pieces of a complete puzzle.
Now, to be clear, the club isn’t going to solve every problem with one or two moves. But *something* has to be on the table. You’re running out of time for any in-season moves to matter. Once this window closes, the next window won’t arrive until July 24. Any new arrivals or departures will effectively have nine MLS games left to impact Atlanta’s season.
Atlanta is about to head into a stretch where 10 of their next 14 matches are on the road. When they return back home for a three-game homestand before Leagues Cup, they’ll be up against Chicago, Charlotte and Seattle, all teams who are much better than the three teams Atlanta just grabbed four points from over three home games. After that, they’ll reach the point in the season where a new signing or two can actually have an impact.
To be clear, there are reasons beyond “WINDOW CLOSING! SCHEDULE HARD! DO SOMETHING!” to make a move. Even if the big scary countdown clock wasn’t ticking in front of us, it would be time to consider making changes after that depressing three-game home stand. Let’s lay them out.
