Atlanta United have their man. After a drawn out search for a high-profile striker, the Five Stripes announced today that Breel Embolo is their choice.
The Switzerland international has signed a contract with the club through the 2029-30 MLS season. He will occupy the third and final DP spot opened up by Latte Lath’s loan earlier this summer.
The 29-year-old target man arrives in Atlanta to join a team in desperate need of someone to lead its attacking line and convert scoring chances.
“We’re pleased to bring a player with Breel’s combination of talent and experience at the highest levels of world soccer to Atlanta United,” Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson said. “At age 29, he’s coming off a strong performance at the World Cup with Switzerland and has a proven track record of goal contributions in multiple top European leagues. His goal-scoring, ability to link with other players in the attack and tireless work rate are qualities that will strengthen our team from the center forward position.”
The transfer saga lasted a lot longer than most people expected, but in the end, Atlanta United gets a proven talisman to add up top.
Embolo is a three-time World Cup veteran with Switzerland and has played all over Europe at the top level his whole career.
With momentum swinging in a good direction for the team lately, adding a battle-tested striker with impressive pedigree should be a huge boost to the squad.
Only time will tell if this is a home-run signing like Josef and Giorgos or a bust like many recent big-money moves. If it works out and Embolo produces at a high level, it would go a long ways in helping turn this club’s fortunes around.
