Ronald Hernández is returning to Atlanta United for a sixth season. The club announced today that it has re-signed the Venezuelan international to a one-year contract with an option for 2027.
This news comes after Hernández’s contract option was declined after last season. After going through the free agent process, he decided to return to the club, presumably at a lower salary that he was previously making.
The defender returns to a squad that has an uncertain outlook at his position of right back. Brooks Lennon also had his contract option declined after last season, leaving the starting spot wide open.
So far this offseason, the only player brought in who is capable of playing the position is U-22 Initiative signing Tomás Jacob from Necaxa, who is able to play in midfield, at center back, and right back.
More than likely, Hernández is being brought back for depth and chemistry purposes. His ability to fill in an back line position in a pinch is very useful. He’s also good friends with several players on the team, which helps with the squad’s overall morale.

*pending financials which based on the circumstances should be an appropriate deal. His undeniable on field chemistry with Miggy is important to getting the best out of him, and he can be a solid role player with occasional upside.
He plays for the badge. He’s a good locker room guy. He wants to be here and he can perform on the pitch. Glad to have him back!
