I believe their rationale for the eight MLS teams chosen is that Houston is the defending champion and then added the next seven U.S. sides that finished highest in the 2023 Supporters Shield standings who aren't already competing in Champions Cup.

Through an ATL fan lens this is fantastic. We only have to go through 7 MLS teams to win a trophy.
Maybe it waters down the trophy.....but I'll still take it. I hope they prioritize it.
