Let’s turn the clocks back a bit. It was January 21, 2020. Before the world turned upside down, the Atlanta United universe was flipped on its head when the club announced it had traded Julian Gressel, an absolutely beloved figure in Five Stripes history.

Supporters were understandably and justifiably upset that someone so integral to the early success of the team was dealt away.

Enter Brooks Lennon. At the time, his acquisition flew under the radar because it came a full month before there was any hint that Gressel could depart the team. The initial reaction to him being brought in was that he’d be a solid depth piece that can play multiple positions.

So, how did Lennon go from unheralded acquisition to one of the best players in all of Major League Soccer? The journey was a lot bumpier than you’d think.
