They’re swapping June matches for November matches. That’s the biggest change. I read one article that noted the schedule remains 90% the same.
Sync with the international break will also be a huge boon- hopefully resulting in fewer “how are we going to cobble together a lineup” matches than we have today.
Playoffs in the late spring are also a boon for the league, with less competition for viewership and removing the chance that your signature event has a snow day.
It would be interesting if they adjust the Next Pro schedule to fill some of that summer gap, and maybe get some eyes on the second teams during the summer break.
The summer transfer window, as it stands today, doesn’t work. Players rarely join the team in enough time to make a competitive difference for that season, and young talent leaves the team mid season for better opportunities. Transfer fees are higher in the winter window because we’re having to compensate the sending teams for losing their payers mid season (arguably the only reason Atlanta had to pay such a high free for ELL).
They’ll figure out how to balance the schedule for the weather. Invest in scarf manufacturing now!
My current season ticket (since 2017) runs to the end of the 2026 season. Will ATLUTD sell a mini "sprint season" ticket and then ANOTHER season ticket for 2027-2028? I see an opportunity to reward founding members here
That would be nice. I could see them selling one package to cover both seasons, with longer payment cycles and some opt-out options. Ideally they could offer a more significant discount for founding members.
I don't feel like this move has anything to do with what's best for the sport.
I can definitely see the appeal to the league and its financial interests, though.
