Let's name some free agents Atlanta United could theoretically sign
Take the field vs. this list but hey, you never know
Free agency starts tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET. That means there’s a whole bunch of players with MLS experience and no attached transfer fee out there waiting to be signed.
Now, we do have to be careful here. The last time I really thought I saw a great fit in free agency for Atlanta United, I pushed for Derrick Etienne. I stand by the logic. There’s also value to find in the re-entry draft. Don’t forget, Atlanta grabbed Derrick Williams in the draft last year. The first stage of the draft—full of players who are basically free agents but don’t have the necessary five years of service time in MLS to qualify—is on Friday. You can take a look at the full list of eligible players for that here.
These players matter. Finding valuable contracts with MLS experience can shape an MLS Cup-winning team. We’ve seen big clubs like LAFC and LA make the most of free agency in Cup years. Maybe Atlanta can do the same. Here are a few names that might make sense for the Five Stripes.
