BREAKING: AMBSE to search for new soccer leader, Garth Lagerwey will not return to Atlanta United
After two leaves of absence as he deals with cancer treatment, Garth Lagerwey's tenure as Atlanta United president has ended. A search for the next soccer president has begun.
Garth Lagerwey will not return to his position as president of Atlanta United, according to a club spokesperson. The club’s ownership entity, Arthur M. Blank Sports and Entertainment, has begun the process of finding a new leader that will oversee operations of both Atlanta United and the newly announced NWSL team set to begin play in 2028. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was first to report.
Lagerwey continues his battle with cancer, a diagnosis he received earlier this year. Chief Sporting Officer Chris Henderson will continue to lead Atlanta United’s roster and staff management as the team heads into the 2026 season under returning head coach Tata Martino.
Lagerwey’s successor will have an expanded role, overseeing the launch of the newly announced NWSL franchise in addition to Atlanta United.

sending POSITIVE vibes to Garth. His battle is significantly more important than any ATLUTD result.
Hope he makes a full recovery. Would have to think a healthy Lagerwey is a prime candidate to replace Don Garber as MLS commissioner
