Bogert: Atlanta United close to completing Breel Embolo signing
The Five Stripes are splashing the cash on an experienced European striker...
Atlanta United’s search for a high-profile strikers seems to be nearing its end. Tommy Scoops is reporting that the Five Stripes are finalizing a deal to sign Switzerland international Breel Embolo from Stade Rennes. According to Bogert, the transfer fee will be around $18 million.
It’s another big swing from Atlanta United’s front office after whiffing on the Latte Lath deal less than two years ago.
Embolo is a known name for hardcore soccer fans, as he’s appeared at three World Cups for Switzerland and has played consistently at the top level in Europe for the majority of his career. However, he’s not exactly a household name that is going to create a ton of buzz or get casual fans into the stadium.
Stylistically, how he fits into the current team and Tata Martino’s system remains to be seen. This feels like a short-team fix to a long-term problem. However, Embolo is 29 years old and could be around for a while if he’s successful with the club.
This is a player that has scored goals every where he’s been, but is he the man to help turn this team’s attack around? That is the big question.
For another huge transfer fee, Atlanta’s front office is making another big gamble that he is.
