Bocanegra confident in signing second impact attacker before window closes
The Five Stripes don't appear to be done adding to the squad.
Atlanta United fans were always hopeful that their team would be able to add two Designated Player signings this summer. Well, it appears as though they will get their wish.
Speaking with the media Tuesday after announcing the signing of Alexey Miranchuk, Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra revealed that he’s confident that his team will make that happen before the MLS Secondary transfer window closes on August 14.
“We’re definitely looking to bring in one more attacking player here, before the end of the window,” Bocanegra told media via a Zoom call. “We feel confident we’ll be able to do that. Hopefully we’ll have an announcement here shortly. Obviously, [this] will be someone who pairs very well with Alexey, as well as the rest of the team.”
While he didn’t specify exactly what position the signing would address, common sense leads us to believe that it will be a like-for-like replacement for the recently departed Giorgos Giakoumakis. Adding an impact striker to the squad was always high on the priority list this summer. It’s now a matter of finding one on the market that fits what the team is looking for in a cornerstone piece for the squad.
The only reason to think the upcoming addition might not be a striker is the fact that the team will now be able to add a third Designated Player in 2025. If the right choice isn’t out there, perhaps another avenue could be explored, such as bringing in a dynamic winger instead.
If you needed any more reason to be excited for what’s coming, you can listen here to Garth Lagerwey declare that Atlanta United “is back,” following the Miranchuk signing…
We’re back?? We give away 2 players to Europe, only really replace 1 (not Wiley), and then we hope will sign 1 more to replace GG? Oh, and we have no coach. But we’re totally back. Like at the start of this year…….
Pretty sure he just meant “we’re back” like when an eighties sitcom came back from commercial break.
