Atlanta United signs Miguel Almiron after completing transfer from Newcastle United
The Paraguayan attacker and Atlanta United legend returns for another spin with the Five Stripes.
It actually happened.
Atlanta United announced today that it has officially acquired Miguel Almiron on a transfer from Newcastle United and signed the Paraguayan midfielder to a three-year contract with an option for 2028.
The signing comes one day away from exactly six years ago when Atlanta announced it had agreed to a deal to send Almiron to Tyneside for a league-record sum to compete in the English Premier League.
Playing in the black-and-white stripes of Newcastle, Almiron scored 23 Premier League goals, but struggled to cement his role at the club under a rotating cast of coaches and a change in ownership that spearheaded heavy investment into the roster.
Almiron, who was once registered under MLS rules as a “Young Designated Player,” will turn 31-years old in just a couple of weeks and presumably returns as a different player physically and mentally than the young starlet that burst on the scene in 2017, immediately vying for MLS MVP status.
He returns to almost a completely different Atlanta United club, with a vastly different roster, coaching staff and executive leadership than the one he left. But it’s the same fans, the same stadium, and he’s still Miggy.
Let us know what you think about the move. And stay tuned to Five Stripe Final this week and beyond, which will have more to come on this story.
Miggy Almiron, Almiron! Miggy Almiron!
He doesn’t need to carry the team. He just needs to be effective in his role. There’s seemingly a lot of talent around him. But, who are we kidding, it feels good to bring back a club legend and a really likable personality.
Couldn’t be more excited! Literally so damn uplifting in so many ways, not the least of which is him still being able to tear it up on the field.
