Atlanta United reportedly nearing loan move for Matías Galarza Fonda
The last piece of the winter transfer window puzzle?
Atlanta United appears to be adding a midfielder to its roster soon. According to multiple reports out of South America, the Five Stripes are set to bring in River Plate midfielder Matías Galarza Fonda on loan.
Supposedly the deal will include a clause that automatically triggers a $3 million purchase option if Galarza Fonda appears in 50 percent of the matches he’s eligible to play in for Atlanta during the length of the loan.
The 24-year-old joined River for a transfer fee of around $5 million less than a year ago but has failed to live up to the price tag. Now he needs a move to secure playing time ahead of this summer’s World Cup, in which he hopes to play in with Paraguay.
He is capable of playing any midfield role. Where he would fit into Tata Martino’s plans remains to be seen.
This seems like an attempt to bring in a talented player with extremely high potential that hasn’t performed well of late. A strategy that worked exceptionally well in Tata’s first tenure with the likes of Josef Martinez and Yamil Asad.
