A brief shortlist of Atlanta United technical director candidates
Or I dunno what if it's just some guy we've never heard of who's good at math?
Atlanta United needs a new technical director.
We’ll do an autopsy on Carlos Bocanegra’s tenure later, but, for now, we’ll start looking forward.
First, we need to consider the criteria for a new technical director (if that’s even what the title will be). We’ll get a better idea in a couple of hours when Garth Lagerwey speaks to the media, but I’d imagine that, just like the coaching search, MLS experience will be a prerequisite. This isn’t a role where someone needs to be learning about dGAM and the U22 initiative on the fly. Atlanta has yachtfulls of money to spend and a fanbase that’s fading fast. It’s time to hit the gas and hit the ground running.
Obviously, from there, you’re looking for someone from an organization that’s had consistent success. After that…I don’t know y’all, kind of seems like those are the only two real criteria. Atlanta has the money and clout to pull just about anyone they want from MLS. Only a few folks would say no. But a few folks make more sense than others.
Important note here: It seems like we’ll find out who’s next sooner rather than later. You can deal with an interim manager for a season while they audition for the job. In this case, you need to start planning immediately for what will basically the busiest offseason in Atlanta United history. Lagerwey will know who’s good and who’s bad at this already. And with the criteria listed above, you won’t be conducting a worldwide search.
The early favorite
